The secret to white elephant (or Yankee swap, or Dirty Santa — same game, regional rules) is that the best gift isn't the funniest one. Gag gifts get one laugh, then someone's stuck driving home with a singing fish. Everyone brings one wrapped gift at an agreed price limit and draws numbers. Player one opens any gift; each following player either opens a new gift or steals an already-opened one (whoever's robbed then opens or steals in turn). Most groups cap a gift at three steals, after which it's frozen. Yankee swap and Dirty Santa are the same game with regional rule tweaks.
The stolen gifts share three traits: universally usable (no sizes, no niche hobbies), slightly nicer than the price limit implies, and fun on the table (great packaging or a story). Consumables — good chocolate, famous cookies, a truffle hot sauce — dominate because everyone can enjoy them and nobody has to store them.
Punch-above-their-price picks: a boutique-brand mini candle ($13), Bombas socks ($14), fancy French caramels ($17), or theory11 designer playing cards ($20). The under-$20 game is won on perceived value — small things from brands people recognize as nice.
Useful wins the game; funny wins one laugh. The best compromise is a conversation-piece gift that's ALSO good — mushroom hot chocolate, a hometown-map tumbler, a city-scented candle. If you must go gag, make it something genuinely usable after the joke lands.
